Skills Kids Need to Learn from K-12

Kindergarten to Grade 2 (Ages 5–7)

  • Motor skills: Buttoning clothes, using scissors and pencils, basic drawing and writing.
  • Speaking and listening: Expressing needs, telling simple stories, following directions, asking and answering questions.
  • Reading and writing: Recognizing letters, phonics, sight words, simple sentences, holding a book correctly.
  • Math: Counting, simple addition/subtraction, recognizing patterns, basic shapes.
  • Social/emotional: Sharing, taking turns, basic self-regulation, understanding feelings.

Grades 3–5 (Ages 8–10)

  • Academic: Reading comprehension, writing complete paragraphs, multiplication/division, basic science experiments.
  • Critical thinking: Following multi-step directions, making predictions, distinguishing fact from opinion.
  • Social: Cooperating on projects, resolving conflicts, forming friendships, developing empathy.
  • Life skills: Telling time, using money, simple chores, basic computer use.

Grades 6–8 (Ages 11–13)

  • Cognitive: More complex problem-solving, abstract reasoning, organizing multi-part projects, researching topics.
  • Communication: Public speaking, writing reports, summarizing information, peer discussions.
  • Personal: Time management, self-monitoring, handling peer pressure, emotional self-awareness.
  • Life: Managing schedules, using technology responsibly, increased independence, practical household tasks.

Grades 9–12 (Ages 14–18)

  • Advanced academics: Critical analysis, research papers, higher-level math, science labs, specialized electives.
  • Executive function: Planning, organization, meeting deadlines, self-advocacy, decision-making.
  • Social/personal: Leadership, teamwork, community service, forming values, exploring future careers.
  • Life skills: Financial literacy, job applications and interviews, car and home basics, coping with stress.
These progressions are guides for typical development, and individual children may move faster or slower in different areas. Every phase lays the groundwork for the next, helping children become capable, confident, and resilient adults.
